The Curriculum Offer
The Aspen Centre is a 20 place provision for students with an Education, Health and Care plan (EHCP) with a primary need of Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH.) The centre is a part of Kempston Academy and allows for a bespoke placement according to the needs of the individual child. Each student’s timetable is individual and can include lessons being taught both within Aspen and within the main school, allowing the best possible opportunities for all students with access to a broad and balanced curriculum. Staff work closely with students and families to build timetables in which students can be successful, these timetables are not fixed and can be increased overtime.
Whilst there is a core staff team who are predominantly based within the Aspen provision, a number of subject specialist staff are also timetabled to be delivering lesson with the Aspen centre. The core curriculum delivered within Aspen is currently consists of the following subject areas:
Key Stage 3 |
Key Stage 4 |
Maths English Science PE History Geography Music Computing Literacy PSHE Art Cooking
|
Maths English Science History Geography Core PE BTEC PE Finance Cooking |
Whilst this is the core offer delivered with Aspen students are able, where appropriate, to join the main school option blocks and access further subjects.
The groups within Aspen are a lot smaller with a higher staff, pupil ratio ensuring that targeted interventions can be offered to students. Students are placed into classes with others of similar age and ability. The curriculum is personalised to match the needs of the child from their EHCP. Targets are reviewed annually.
Admission to Aspen
Admission to the Provision is through the local authority (Bedford Borough Council) SEND Team in line with their operational policy and procedures, and placement will be considered at the SEND Panel against Bedford Borough guidance for admission into a specialist placement. If it is agreed a pupil matches guidance for placement the School will be formally consulted in line with the SEN Code of Practice, and in consultation with the Headteacher of Kempston Academy. We work in partnership with Bedford Borough to provide support for pupils and their families as it’s needed and can signpost children and families to external agencies for support when needed.
